GBP A Bank of England survey revealed that UK companies are planning to offer average wage increases of 3.1% in 2018, the strongest forecasts since 2008, which will maintain expectations of a slow net increase in underlying inflation. Employment agents also reported increased recruitment difficulties while growth remained modest.

GBP January’s UK consumer inflation fell 0.5% (seasonal) but the year-on-year rate held at 3% against expectations of a small decline to 2.9%. The core rate increased to 2.7% from 2.5%, beating consensus forecasts of a slight increase to 2.6%.

GBP Gertjan Vlieghe, a Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) member, stated that there was increasing evidence that a healthy jobs market was putting upward pressure on wages. Although macroprudential measures are “tightening policy”, interest rates would also need to be raised, especially given strength in the global economy.

GBP Sterling drifted upwards on Friday, a welcome bounce following a rough week that saw the UK's currency take a haircut versus the US Dollar. Industrial production fell 1.3% in December; more than the 0.9% fall forecasted.

GBP The GBPUSD is trading up 0.5% from yesterday at around 1.3970 against the US Dollar and 1.1367 against the Euro respectively. Cable was boosted strongly yesterday after the Bank of England explained within the Inflation Report that it might need to hike rates sooner and faster than originally estimated.
